Who can take Amateur Radio Exams

Any citizen who isn't a representative of a foreign government. Age is of no consideration nor is race, sex, religion; etc. The FCC makes final decision on all questionable applicants.

Where can I take the EXAM?

All exams are now administered by volunteer examiners (VE's), such as Team GCARS VE team, under one of several volunteer examiners co-coordinators. We are certified and work under the ARRL VEC. We list our exam sessions on this web page (see 'Session Dates') and with the ARRL to post on http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml.

Remember to use the restrooms BEFORE you pick up your test material. If you need to leave the room after you start your test, it will be graded as is whether it is 1, 5, 12 or 35 questions answered up to that time. You MAY NOT RESUME testing when you return. An additional fee and different test would be required. Sorry, those are the rules.

What should I bring with me?

If you are taking the "TECH" exam, all you will need is a legal type photo id such as a drivers license. School age children should bring their school or state ID. It also helps to bring Mom or Pop along.  You will also need $14.00, preferable cash during the 2007 year.

If you are upgrading, in addition to the above you will need the original AND ONE COPY of your current license and the original AND ONE COPY of ANY CSCE's from previous exam sessions. Without these items, no credit can be given until we have them in hand. FCC rules......

When no photo ID is available, the candidate must present any two of the following items:

F Non-photo ID/driver’s license (some states still have them);

F Social Security Card (as FCC now requires each applicant to supply a taxpayer ID number)

F Birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal);

F Minor’s work permit or school report card;

F Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or

F Postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605.

May I use any aids?

No books and/or paper will be allowed at the desk other than what the VE group hands out. You will be allowed to use a calculator, BUT, if it is programmable, the memories will be erased and the battery/s removed. You may then reinstall them and use it.

Who is Team GCARS VE team?

We are a group of local area HAMs who love our hobby and devote many hours to assist those who are interested in getting a new or upgraded Amateur Radio License. Of the $14.00 we cannot keep any portion other than to cover any cost we incur. To date we have never kept any and donate all our local supplies

We have also been involved with several classes in years past and recently help when request to do so by the ARES group.

When can I get on the air?

This is, after all, what it is all about. Normally you will see your NEW license call letters on the FCC database about mid-week following our Saturday test session. Once you have call letters posted, you can get on the air.

In the case of an upgrade, you may start using the new privilege you have earned as soon as you have a signed CSCE from your VE team (and they have congratulated you ';o)    ) in your hands.
